Studying Anthropologie

10 02 2010

Usually I admire a great number of cute things from Anthropologie without thinking that they would work in my house. Today on their website I spotted some new, tropical decor inspired pieces that really make me want to take them home and I thought I’d share.

I like this shelving unit – it’s utilitarian with an unexpected tropical look.

These rope is traditionally coastal and these coiled rope knobs add a touch of the ocean without being overwhelming.  I think these would look great on an old piece of furniture to give it a new feel.

I want…

6 01 2010

…this chair from Restoration Hardware. It is the French Upholstered Wing Chair covered in Vintage Velvet fabric in Charcoal.

I think I need this chair – it would look good in the part of my living room where we sit and read books. My living room furniture is grey so this would be a great addition to the room. I love nailheads, oh boy, do I love nailhead furniture.

But mostly I just think this chair looks amazing. It goes in the want pile and the “maybe one day” list.  As much as I love the way this chair looks, I’d like to put shelves in my closet first.

An Oasis of Clean

19 10 2009

Otherwise known as my living room. In a mad dash this weekend, we cleaned out the living room, painted more of the trim, put up new curtains, hung shelves, put down rugs and made it the one room in the house were we could bring guests. It’s great to have a nearly completed room in the house. Decor touches like pictures on the walls need to be added to the room, but probably will work itself out when the house gets closer to being complete.

We worked on the one room because we had friends coming over and it worked out really well. There’s no way to hide the rest of your house but having one oasis of clean in the house really makes a big difference.

In cleaning out the living room we managed to get some smaller projects done and actually used our basement! We are now storing things in the basement, and it’s nice that we are finally using the space.  Oh man, it rained like crazy here this weekend. Yesterday night we went out to dinner and there were downed tree limbs.  If it hadn’t rained so much, I am sure that we would have used the basement more.  We have to go outside to access our basement effectively, and the off and on rain made that a hard job.

As for the rest of the house, the first floor is really coming along, especially the bathroom and kitchen. This week more painting, unpacking, hanging shelves and all of that and hopefully another completed room soon. This picture is from Elle Decor and I love the casual way the art in the room is sitting on the shelves instead of hanging. I could see that happening in one of my rooms!

Books!

23 09 2009

Today we are starting to put up our shelving on the wall in the living room, which is primarily for books.  There is a whole wall in the living room that has no windows on it, but has a register running along the baseboard, so we thought mounting shelves on the wall would be the best bet for us.  We got shelves from the store, they are nice and sturdy white melamine and hold up to 100lbs, so we are in business for keeping books up there.

We’re at that time where there is a lot and nothing going on at the same time.  I paint details, trim, edging and the like and rehang the doors I’ve painted in the past few weeks.  We’re almost done taking out all of the carpet in the house – there are four rooms left total and one is the small first floor bathroom.  I’m happy to be settling in finally and really unpacking more of our stuff.  That’s the worst part, living in a place but not knowing where anything is at all, especially my books.  I read whenever I can and books are like old friends, so it has been hard having them boxed up and jumbled.

For all the work we’ve done, we’ve got a long way to go.  This inspiration picture from House Beautiful to show how nicely bookselves can be done.  Time to get back to work.

Time for the weekend

17 09 2009

Hey it’s time for the weekend again.  I am happy to report that we are getting out of the endless painting and ripping out of carpet in some of the rooms on the first floor.  Yay!  That makes me so happy for the weekend, we can finally start decorating in here soon.

With the happy thought of actually unpacking coming up, I have pulled some coastal inspiration pictures from Coastal Living to share.   This first living room picture makes me so happy.  I love the bookcases and the glass lamps.  There’s a cool mix of textures going on in there.

This master bath isn’t a room we are close to finishing yet, but I love the way it looks.  Never before have I been so attracted to making rooms look calm and clean the way I am now.  Maybe it comes from living in so many blah apartments, but I’ve always gone dramatic.  This understated look with a mix of texture really grabs me now and explains why I love staying at hotels so much.

Anyway I am off to do more work on the house and will have a progress update for you on Monday.  This weekend I am hooked on unpacking and decorating (Hooked on Houses blog party) and inspired to make my old decor mix in with few new pieces to give it an updated feel (The Inspired Room Beautiful Life party).

One whole month!

14 09 2009

We’ve been in the house a month now and that is pretty exciting.  It’s also terrifying, we’re still moving stuff out of the apartment and progress is slower than we anticipated.  We gave ourselves six weeks to do things like get packed and make the house ready but somehow whenever we start a house project it becomes much longer and more involved than we thought originally.  We worked on the packing this weekend, going between the apartment and house and boxing things up and unpacking and reusing boxes.  It was so gratifying to finally pack up my spices in the kitchen and bring them to the house – now I feel like I can really cook here!

Aside from slow progress, the house feels like home.  We know our way through it in the dark already and we’re getting used to being here, commuting from here, going to the grocery store and doing all of our normal things.  The neighborhood is great, and the neighbors we’ve seen were all friendly.

Since last Monday we’ve made a fair bit of progress on the house.  James removed the carpet in the family room upstairs to reveal vinyl flooring which is fine for now.  The carpet came up fairly quickly, and we got most of it bagged up to be thrown out.  I painted the master bedroom, which James had primed for me.  We have a great blue color paint from Ralph Lauren and it’s pretty awesome looking on the walls.  I’ve also painted the trim in the kitchen and started the trim in the living room.  We have a new kitchen faucet to install and cute Halloween lights for the bushes outside of our house.  There was a big trip to ikea in the middle of the week, and we got a glass shelf for the upstairs bathroom – there is no medicine cabinet, so we put a shelf under the mirror.  The upstairs toilet needed a few replacement parts inside so we have a repair kit for it, hopefully to be done this week.

I also snagged this great garland from Grandin Road pictured above for $9.  I got the matching wreath as well and our banister and door will look so great this holiday season.  Today I am up for more painting and hopefully finishing up the living room, it will be our first completed room!

Time for the weekend – organizing queen!

11 09 2009

This weekend is all about organization for me. Organizing has been one of my biggest battles since I was a child – I loved to keep everything but never had a place for it. I have since gotten a little better about editing but I still struggled with a place for it all.

In the new house we are trying to think of the best ways to house the many things we are bringing with us. James and I are avid readers, I enjoy antique maps and postcards, he likes lego sets and so forth. These funny little things that end up here and there in our space are what we are using to make it really feel like home but I never want them to look too messy.  We’ve also got a normal amount of things like towels and such that need to find their way into the bathrooms neatly since one bath has no built in storage space and the other is tiny.

The house has so much potential for us, it’s fun to come up with new ideas and finish projects here. I never thought that I would have this much room to keep stuff in, so I am trying to find just that spot in the house, the place where it makes sense and won’t be in the way but won’t get lost. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen some of my books because we just didn’t have the shelf space in the apartment for all of them.

Anyway I’m all organization all the time this weekend, channeling my inner organizing queen to find a way to comfortably get our collections housed and make the house look neat and homey.

I’m sharing this with Hooked on Houses (I’m hooked on organization) and the beautiful life party at The Inspired Room have a good weekend yall!  Picture from House Beautiful, of course!

The fantasy room

When I think about houses, I also think about what I would love in a house but it isn’t necessarily in my home.  Either for space concerns or whatever reason, the room becomes my fantasy room – the room I would have if I could have it.

ADAMS_4_lg

What’s your room like?  Mine changes from day to day, sometimes I think it is a walk in cedar closet organized and refreshing to walk into, or an expansive library filled with books and leather chairs,  a movie room that no theatre could compete with and some days it’s an elegant bathroom with a claw foot tub with jacuzzi jets, with fresh flowers nearby and radiant heating in the floor.  Wouldn’t it be lovely if we could all just go to the solarium today and have tea?

Amazing Glass

23 07 2009

My mom loves glass art work.  She was recently out and saw some amazing Dale Chihuly work that she loved and was all abuzz about it.

I find myself more and more attracted to glass artwork.  There are some very talented glass artists out there and it’s such a pleasure to have a beautiful and delicate piece in your home.  There’s something so expressive and different about colored glass, that I find myself admiring it in pictures.  I love ceramics as well and think that you can achieve a beautiful mix of the two in a home.

I read an article at the doctors office almost a year ago about a woman that made glass sinks.  Can you even imagine how beautiful that could be?!  I think the article was in Southern Living, so if you have any old copies of it, let me know who it was!

Both of the pictured pieces are by Dale Chihuly, and are from Holstein Galleries.

The reading room

One of the rooms that I’ve always loved in a home no matter how big or small it is, is a room where part of it is dedicated to reading.  Whether it is a comfy chair tucked into a corner, a window seat or a full library room, I love to see a house where you can just imagine yourself curled right up with a good book.

I like this chair from target.  It looks perfect for the reading room.
