Studying Anthropologie

10 02 2010

Usually I admire a great number of cute things from Anthropologie without thinking that they would work in my house. Today on their website I spotted some new, tropical decor inspired pieces that really make me want to take them home and I thought I’d share.

I like this shelving unit – it’s utilitarian with an unexpected tropical look.

These rope is traditionally coastal and these coiled rope knobs add a touch of the ocean without being overwhelming.  I think these would look great on an old piece of furniture to give it a new feel.

Tiny house update

28 01 2010

It’s been a while since I did a house update on the blog – mostly because it’s been a while since we’ve done anything of note besides both get the flu and colds.  So we’ve been slowed down a bit with the house work and our closet did not get done!  It’s a two person job, one for holding the pieces in place and one for securing them to the wall and since we started one of us has been in bed sick.  At least we’ve been able to read our library books!  I highly recommend Maisie Dobbs to all the mystery lovers or those that like historical fiction.

Anywho, we’re limping right along in house progress.  More floor has been laid in my office, only hindered by the fact that I ran out before.  I managed to clean the closet in our drawing room upstairs and that’s where some of the clothes from the master bedroom closet are hiding out until we get that squared away.  We’ve got shelving and closet stuff galore just waiting to be installed.  In the kitchen the slatted doors that hide our cleaning supplies were painted blue and they look great.  Better than imagined even!  I’m not finished painting, I didn’t take do the detail work around the hardware or the insides of all the doors, but the fronts painted blue make the room look completely different.

The weather here has been warmer for a while and the snow melted, revealing that we did nothing to the yard last fall.  I hope that we can get it together and get out there in March but time is flying by – it’s the end of January already!

The entryway picture above is from Livingetc.com.  I’d love a cute entryway like that, but alas mine is teeny tiny.

I love this room

This bedroom from Coastal Living is perfect!  I love the canopy, the gray throw at the end of the bed, the lamp on the side table and the decorative pillow.  Absolutely perfect!

Recovering

2 11 2009

Last week we had trubbles.  Not much was done in the house until after we got the plumbing fixed.  I don’t want to talk about it, because it was bad enough living in it.  We’re still recovering from our trubbles.  After getting through all of the trouble, we did manage to get some things done.  We had trick or treaters!  That absolutely made my night, because we weren’t sure how many kids were going to show up and we had tons of kids.  We refilled our pumpkin a few times (although I never let it get empty) and were dressed up when we opened the door.

On Sunday James installed the shower!  I tried it but haven’t showered yet, but it’s so nice to know that I can shower now if I want!  It looks great in the bathroom.  We did a little rearranging of furniture, a little unpacking of this and that and made the bedroom feel much more comfortable.  It’s funny how if you do something for a long time you can get used to it, even if it was only supposed to be temporary.  I had the dresser out just outside of the bedroom door and we just got used to going out there to get our clothes.  Now it’s where it belongs – inside the room.

Today I’m just going to go with whatever I need to do.  I’m planning on working a lot on the house this week, but I’ve also got some bloggy changes in store.  We may have a bit of technical difficulty.  You’ve been forewarned!

Picture is from House Beautiful.  For some reason today I just wanted to see walls painted black, so here you go!

Time for the weekend

23 10 2009

Can I get a huge WOOHOO! for the weekend?!  Most of the time, I am just happy for the weekend but this weekend it’s so much more than that.  This weekend is the first time since we got the house that we are not either moving stuff to the house, ripping things out of the house, traveling or otherwise busy.  A lazy weekend!

Really it will be a lazy weekend for us.  I am not feeling like I have an all out cold/flu, but I am not feeling like myself, so I am inclined to rest this weekend especially since we have a new TV.  Ahh, the TV!  I was so excited for it, it was a small gift to ourselves bought with part of the security deposit we got back from the apartment.  Our old TV, which is still great and we got after Christmas on sale is now up in the bedroom and while it was too small for the living room, it’s the perfect size up here.

Next week (can you believe it will be Halloween?!) I am planning on getting back into my routine and continuing work on the house.  I’ve got some great pictures from Traditional Home magazine about kitchen storage, which is actually a project I have yet to tackle and have been thinking about.  The kitchen is the room that is next closest to being done with painting, but it feels worlds away from being done.  Anyway next week should be interesting – we have a lot of work to do before the weather gets too cold here.

Enjoy the inspiration pictures (I’m sharing them for Beautiful Life Friday) and have a good weekend y’all!

Inspiration weekend

2 10 2009

I’m needing some inspiration today. When you have multiple projects, it helps to be able to see the end goal. I would rather work with something in mind than just work.  I love the warm, yet bright feeling in these rooms and I think it starts with the wall color.  Light walls don’t have to be blah, they can really warm a room up.

We’re still working here at the gingerbread house, although I think James will be excited to have one weekend where we are not ferrying boxes between apartment to house.

Enjoy the inspiration and have a good weekend.  Pictures are from house beautiful.  Hooked on Fridays, hooked on bright walls, and clearly I’ve been inspired, so here’s my bright inspiration for the Beautiful Life party.

A place to write longhand

I love the thought of a desk that you can actually write at – not one like mine that is dominated by several computers. A writing desk isn’t practical for me, but I do love to look at these pictures.  Does anyone write notes out anymore?  I used to work in a store that sold cards etc and I learned about the importance of paper.  I still have loads of folded notes and cards that I used to send out but I never have the time anymore.

Anyway, offices are some of my favorite pictures to look at because I know that I am going to spend a lot of time in mine here at home, and I love getting the ideas, but mostly seeing an organized space.  Clear desks, organized papers and no clutter really embody what I love in an office.

Books!

23 09 2009

Today we are starting to put up our shelving on the wall in the living room, which is primarily for books.  There is a whole wall in the living room that has no windows on it, but has a register running along the baseboard, so we thought mounting shelves on the wall would be the best bet for us.  We got shelves from the store, they are nice and sturdy white melamine and hold up to 100lbs, so we are in business for keeping books up there.

We’re at that time where there is a lot and nothing going on at the same time.  I paint details, trim, edging and the like and rehang the doors I’ve painted in the past few weeks.  We’re almost done taking out all of the carpet in the house – there are four rooms left total and one is the small first floor bathroom.  I’m happy to be settling in finally and really unpacking more of our stuff.  That’s the worst part, living in a place but not knowing where anything is at all, especially my books.  I read whenever I can and books are like old friends, so it has been hard having them boxed up and jumbled.

For all the work we’ve done, we’ve got a long way to go.  This inspiration picture from House Beautiful to show how nicely bookselves can be done.  Time to get back to work.

In progress

16 09 2009

I wanted to show you a picture of the house in progress.  It’s just a tiny peak at the house, but it’s come so far.

Let’s start with the before picture – this was the master bedroom before from the photos in the listing.  Though the furniture was removed before we moved in, note the orange carpet.

70777909_P11Here it is in progress, after one coat of paint and primer.  I took this a few days ago so there’s more paint on the walls.  I love this blue color, it’s from Ralph Lauren and it’s called Blue Agave.  I think it makes it look much more coastal in here.  We also took up the carpet to reveal that the wood floors had already been painted a burgundy type of color, so we decided to paint it the brown once we were done with the walls and trim.

One whole month!

14 09 2009

detailFamilyTmp

We’ve been in the house a month now and that is pretty exciting.  It’s also terrifying, we’re still moving stuff out of the apartment and progress is slower than we anticipated.  We gave ourselves six weeks to do things like get packed and make the house ready but somehow whenever we start a house project it becomes much longer and more involved than we thought originally.  We worked on the packing this weekend, going between the apartment and house and boxing things up and unpacking and reusing boxes.  It was so gratifying to finally pack up my spices in the kitchen and bring them to the house – now I feel like I can really cook here!

Aside from slow progress, the house feels like home.  We know our way through it in the dark already and we’re getting used to being here, commuting from here, going to the grocery store and doing all of our normal things.  The neighborhood is great, and the neighbors we’ve seen were all friendly.

Since last Monday we’ve made a fair bit of progress on the house.  James removed the carpet in the family room upstairs to reveal vinyl flooring which is fine for now.  The carpet came up fairly quickly, and we got most of it bagged up to be thrown out.  I painted the master bedroom, which James had primed for me.  We have a great blue color paint from Ralph Lauren and it’s pretty awesome looking on the walls.  I’ve also painted the trim in the kitchen and started the trim in the living room.  We have a new kitchen faucet to install and cute Halloween lights for the bushes outside of our house.  There was a big trip to ikea in the middle of the week, and we got a glass shelf for the upstairs bathroom – there is no medicine cabinet, so we put a shelf under the mirror.  The upstairs toilet needed a few replacement parts inside so we have a repair kit for it, hopefully to be done this week.

I also snagged this great garland from Grandin Road pictured above for $9.  I got the matching wreath as well and our banister and door will look so great this holiday season.  Today I am up for more painting and hopefully finishing up the living room, it will be our first completed room!
