For the love of Ironstone

29 05 2009

Ironstone is one of my favorite things.  Let me explain – a while ago I was looking for new plates (well new to me) and I kept seeing ironstone and being attracted to it.  As I was looking I realized that ironstone when used as a component in ceramics makes it a type of stoneware that was used for heavy duty dinner services in the 19th century (according to Wikipedia).  I liked the unique and durable look to the ironstone and set off starting up a collection for myself.

I’ve got an ironstone platter coming through a friend of mine, but for right now this is all that I have in the house.

These beautiful green floral plates were on Etsy – unfortunately two broke during shipping.  The seller was sweet enough to send me replacements in a different pattern (even though I only paid $7 for the original sale set) and I think they make a fine addition to my casual dinnerware.

Oh I just fell in love with these plates!  Etsy seller Eddie Ross had them in his store and I had to have them.   The set of four is made of two older and two visibly newer plates but they are all the same size and shape and have such charm.  I can’t wait to have a party where I can use these to serve appetizers!

I love the durability, the designs and the off-white color of ironstone.  I hope to build a great collection starting with these pieces.
