Collections

30 04 2009

An interesting thought occurred to me yesterday while I was trying to move the mess in my living room out of the way for couch delivery day.  I have collected music boxes for a while and while that and cookbooks are the only thing that I will cop to collection, I do collect things.  How do you house collections?  James collects computers and it was challenging (to say the least) to find a way to protect his electronics with all of our stuff.

I routinely purge things, we recycle and get rid of things, but I am always stumped when it comes to displaying collections.  Besides a house full of bookshelves or making your house look like a museum, what is the best way?  Curios, consoles, or some other table display?  I am going to look into it since we are already looking into furniture and see what I come up with.

I’d love to hear about your collections?  Do you collect wooden toys, magazines, concert ticket stubs, old photos, etc.?  What kinds of ephemera do you have about?  Do you let people see your collections or are they more private?

About the picture: Simone ‘Simca’ Beck wrote this French cookbook after she and Julia Child authored Mastering.  I have particular edition with this cover and it’s one of my favorites in my collection

Add Curb Appeal

29 04 2009

I’m always in the mood for planting a garden.  My dad is quite the avid gardener and landscaper and I think I inherited it from him.  If you are going to get out there and do something in the garden, this is definitely the time!

Here’s a clip from Lowe’s about adding curb appeal to a home.  I really liked what they did because the house really didn’t have much in the front yard before, all you noticed was the driveway.   Enjoy!

My house

29 04 2009

Sorry for the unexpected break yesterday kiddos.  I am clearly working too hard!  It was 93 here yesterday and instead of hitting the beach I hit Michael’s craft store and got some more work supplies!

I’ve been thinking a lot about what furniture I want in my house right now because my furniture is falling apart.  For the amount of moving we’ve done in the past few years, I am not surprised at all!  Let me show you what I have in mind for some replacements.

2005920bc_1I am excited to debut my new couch!  This picture hardly does it justice but it has an unbelievably soft texture to it.  We got this couch and the armchair from Bernie and Phyl’s right down the street from us in Braintree.  I can’t wait until it gets here.  It’s got a little sink in factor to it because it is deep, but it is very comfortable.

gfur000111I’d love to spruce up my bedroom with this bed from Z Gallerie.  It would be so dramatic and yet restful at the same time.  The biggest upgrade in our bedroom isn’t the bed itself but the size on the mattress.  I am definitely going for king this time!  Sometimes you need a little room to spread out.

For my office I am really wanting these two pieces from CB2.  I currently use about three computers when I sit down at my desk and I would love to have room to move my knees.  The file cabinet coordinates so well and would not only house my plethora of paper files but also match my magazine holders that I got from Ikea earlier this year.  James also wants a desk from here, so it the whole room would feel very stylish and modern when we pull it together.

Bea Arthur

27 04 2009

I know that most of you already know that our beloved Bea Arthur has died.   There are many beautiful blog posts and web entries about her.  I’m going to add my own little bit because I can’t think of anything I love more than witty one liners and the plethora of Chanel that she used to wear.

Bea Arthur was one of those actresses that made you think it was ok to think, the guys still liked her, she was sarcastic and pragmatic and not without the occasional break down.  It didn’t make sense to me that she was playing an old woman in the Golden Girls because outside of her grey hair, there wasn’t anything old about her.

I’ll admit it, I’ve never seen a full episode of Maude.  What I’ve seen Bea Arthur in besides Golden Girls was the Star Wars Christmas special.  But I’ll take a tall ballsy broad any day.  I wish there were more shows on the air like the Golden Girls and less of ‘reality’ TV.

Cheers to you Bea Arthur.

Time for the weekend

24 04 2009

Alright y’all, time for the weekend again.  We’re still working on a great many things around here, but everything is going REALLY WELL.  I believe that my store will be up and running soon and I am looking forward to sharing some work that I am doing in the apartment with you as well as my new couch!  James and I went out last weekend to get a new couch and though it isn’t due here for at least another week, I am so so happy at the thought of it and can’t wait to share it with you.

For this time for the weekend I wanted to share this clip that’s featured on youtube.  Beyonce doesn’t really seem like she is acting to me, she is tough!  I wouldn’t want to mess with her (but on the flip side how good does that hair color look?)  Ali Larter gets some good hits in too, this is a serious girlfight!  I am not into this movie, but I will admit to watching the clip more than once.

Alright have a good weekend and enjoy!

No VOC paint

23 04 2009

I didn’t do a special Earth Day post yesterday because quite frankly I forgot it was Earth Day until I was bashed over the head with it on HGTV.  All throughout the year there are things that I try to show that are eco-friendly and green and not just on one special day.

However, I embrace the spirit of Earth Day and in that spirit here is some information on low VOC paints.  VOC is volatile organic compound, basically bad stuff that you can breathe in the form of fumes.  If you have a paint full of this stuff, it can give you headaches, nausea, all the nasty things that make us want to put off our painting projects.

Shewin-Williams produces Harmony, a no VOC interior paint.  It is low odor and has some pretty good attributes like low odor, sustainably packaged, buildings can be occupied immediately after painting, and it comes in a number of attractive finishes.  Honestly, I had never even heard of this paint before today, but if you think about what a headache it is to dispose of paint, this paint sounds like a step in the right direction.

So check out the details here and try to make your next painting project healthier and greener.

Historic Home

22 04 2009

seatl020-1

This historic home is a 1919 Craftsman Bungalow in Atlanta, Georgia.  This craftsman has been masterfully updated with granite counter tops and stainless steal appliances in the kitchen, and a master bath with a marble floor and clawfoot tub.  It retains gorgeous original features like ten foot ceilings, large wraparound deck and original woodwork.

Other endearing features of the house include a fenced in backyard, four fireplaces and full basement and attic spaces.  The attic has a permanent staircase and would be wonderful for storing seasonal items.

The exterior was recently painted and the hardwood floors refinished this year. A reverse osmosis water filtration system was installed and the furnace and water heater replaced in 2007. Electrical and plumbing systems have been updated. The porch floor and substructure were completely rebuilt in 2006.

A place I find myself drawn to more and more on the web is PopPhoto.com.  I have become increasingly interested in photography since I started planning my wedding and exploring photography options for my business.  It’s a cool website and gives you a lot of eye candy while you absorb some really interesting information.  I feel like I learn an encyclopedia of new things everything I visit the site.   They have camera and equipment reviews, forums and photo tips that answer just about every question a beginner like me had.

If you are remotely interested in photography I highly recommend a visit to here.  You can see some very masterful photos and read about the technical side of photography.

Gordon Ramsay’s Crispy Salmon Recipe

21 04 2009

With the weather changing the way it has been recently, the food I want changes daily.  I tend to like lighter foods when it is warmer, but this salmon recipe combines hearty potatoes and light salmon – the best of both worlds in this uncertain springtime weather.

Resort Style

20 04 2009

Have you ever noticed how the most wonderful hotels make you feel like you feel like a small child visiting a rich uncle?  I love the way that a hotel can relax the visitors and have a sophisticated style of its own.

Every aspect of a resort is made to impress and pamper, and I love looking at them.  I don’t think I could get bored with the wonderful interiors and image unless I worked at one.
